How to do an intervention!
An intervention usually includes the following steps:
- Make a plan. A family member or friend proposes an intervention and forms a planning group.
- Gather information.
- Form the intervention team.
- Should there be consequences?
(negative reenforcement has struggled to provide long term behavioral change.) - Make notes on what to say and not to say.
Important vocabulary: It is not safe to quit cold turkey. Lets work together. We could start with A good night sleep.” - Hold the intervention meeting.
- Discuss next steps per some options.
- Always trying to get our loved one to a doctor and a meeting.
- Follow up and follow up some more.
Ultimately, we are trying to develop more opportunities for our loved one to be ready to quit.
