How to do an intervention!

An intervention usually includes the following steps:

  1. Make a plan. A family member or friend proposes an intervention and forms a planning group.
  2. Gather information.
  3. Form the intervention team.
  4. Should there be consequences?
(negative reenforcement has struggled to provide long term behavioral change.)
  5. Make notes on what to say and not to say.
Important vocabulary: It is not safe to quit cold turkey. Lets work together. We could start with A good night sleep.”
  6. Hold the intervention meeting.
  7. Discuss next steps per some options.
  8. Always trying to get our loved one to a doctor and a meeting.
  9. Follow up and follow up some more.

Ultimately, we are trying to develop more opportunities for our loved one to be ready to quit.
